DESCRIPTION: Length up to 15mm.  Also known as the 'U-Tailed Mottle' this Crane-Fly is best identified by the light grey thorax that sports various darker markings and the mottled wings that are made up of a light and dark patches.  The abdomen of the male is grey with darker marks whilst that of the female is of a warmer brown with paler banding. The wings are held along the length of the body. BEHAVIOUR: Can be found in good numbers during the daytime where individuals rest up in loose aggregations within herbage and on sunny fences and walls. The larvae can be found in various mosses. DISTRIBUTION: Common throughout the UK. HABITAT: Damp areas in parks, gardens, hedgerows and woodland. PERIOD: A late flying species best seen from August to October.
